Air pollution is a leading cause of cancer and classified among Group 1,or top, human carcinogens (致癌物质), said the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the World Health Organization's (WHO) cancer agency, on Oct 17,2013.

The most widely used system for classifying carcinogens comes from the IARC, which places them into five groups. Group 1 carcinogens definitely cause cancer in humans. Group 2A is probably carcinogenic to humans, Group 2B is possibly carcinogenic, the carcinogenicity of Group 3 in humans is unclassifiable, and Group 4 is probably not carcinogenic to humans. Only a little more than 100 are classified as Group 1 cancer-causing substances, including ultraviolet radiation and tobacco smoke.

“Our task was to evaluate the air everyone breathes rather than focus on specific air pollutants,” the lARC's Dana Loomis said in a statement. “The results from the reviewed studies point in the same direction: the risk of developing lung cancer is significantly increased in people exposed to air pollution.”

In 2010, lung cancer resulting from air pollution killed 223,000 people worldwide, and there was also convincing evidence that it increases the risk of bladder (膀腕) cancer, according to the IARC.

Air pollution is already known to raise risks for a wide range of illnesses, including respiratory and heart diseases.

Air pollution is global, although the levels of it vary over space and time.

Loomis said people in Asia, eastern North America, some places in Central America and Mexico, as well as North Africa have relatively high exposure. Developing countries with large populations and booming manufacturing sectors, such as China, are particularly at risk.

Many cities in China, such as Beijing, frequently see smog. This week, Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang province, became the first Chinese city to officially suspend classes due to serious smog

Many developed countries face similar problems, although to a lesser degree than most developing

nations. In Europe, levels of many pollutants have fallen. But between 91 and 96 percent of Europeans living in cities are exposed to levels of PM2.5—tiny particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers—that are higher than the WHO safety limits, says a report published by the European Environment Agency on Oct 15.

Although both the composition and levels of air pollution can vary dramatically from one location to the other, the 1ARC said its conclusions apply to all regions of the world. “Given the scale of the exposure affecting people worldwide, this report should send a strong signal to the international community to take action without further delay,” said Christopher Wild, director of the IARC.

1、What might be the best title of the passage? A.Signals of air pollution B.Safety limits of air pollution C.Air pollution, cancer risk D.Air pollution, smog risk 2、What’s the main task of IARC?

A.To focus on cancer-causing substances. B.To evaluate the air quality.

C.To study the developing risk of cancer. D.To send signals to the international community.

3、Why should the international community take action without further delay? A.The composition and levels of air pollution vary from place to place. B.More and more people in developing countries are exposed to air pollution. C.Developed countries face air pollution, the level of which is higher than the safety limits.

D.A large number of people worldwide are exposed to air pollution.

It is often necessary to release a fish, that is , set it free after catching, because it is too

small, or you just don’t want to take it home to eat. In some cases, releasing fish is a good measure that will help keep fish variety and build their population size. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) encourages fishermen who practice catch-and-release fishing to use a few simple skills when doing so. The advice provided below will help make sure that the fish you release will survive (存活) to bite again another day.

—When catching a fish, play it quickly and keep the fish in the water as much as possible. Don’t use a net in landing the fish and release it quickly to prevent it from dying. —Hold the fish gently. Do not put your fingers in its eyes. Don’t wipe the scales (鱼鳞) off the fish because it might cause it to develop a disease and reduce its chance of survival. —Remove your hook (鱼钩) quickly. If the hook is too deep or hooked in the stomach, cut the line and leave the hook in. The hook left inside will cause no serious problem to the fish. —Take good care of the fish by moving it gently in water . Release the fish when it begins to struggle and is able to swim.

—Do not hold fish in a bucket or some other containers and later decide to release it. If you are going to release a fish, do so right away.

With a little care and by following the suggestions given above, you can give the released fish a better chance of survival.

Joan Chen is famous both in China, where she grew up, and in the United States, where she now lives. How did Joan become a famous actress in two countries? It’s an interesting story. Joan Chen was born in Shanghai in 1961. When she was 14, some people from a film studio (制片厂) came to her school and chose her to study at the studio. She was happy about this chance, but mainly she liked the idea of getting out of school. Soon, however she discovered that she really liked acting. At age 18, she won the Golden Rooster, China's top film prize.

In the late 1970s, Joan's parents, who were doctors, moved to the United States. Joan joined them when she was 20 and went to college there. Her parents hoped she would study medicine. Instead, she majored in film and later looked for work as an actress. To work in the United States, Joan had to start all over again. She told Hollywood that she was an actress in China, but she only got some small parts in TV shows.

One day Joan went to speak to a director who was making a movie called Tai - pan. The interview didn't go well. As she walked away, a man in a car noticed her. The man was Dino DeLaurntiis, the film’s producer. He immediately offered her a leading part. A year later, she started in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor and was on her way to worldwide fame. 1. What was turn about Joan Chen when she was 14?

B. She liked to study at the studio just because she wanted to be famous.

C. The most important reason for her going to the studio was that she wouldn't like to stay at school.

D. She found she was fond of acting even before she was 14.

由第二段 “When she was 14, some people from a film studio came to her school and chose her to study at the studio…”可知,A错误;由 “…but mainly she liked the idea of getting out of school…”可以推断,她不喜欢呆在学校, 故B选项不正确,C选项正确;由 “Soon, however she discovered that she really liked acting.”

2. When did she move to the States? A. In the late 1970s.

B. After she graduated from college.

C. In the late 1980s. D. In the early 1980s.

由第三段的第一、二句 “In the late 1970s, Joan's parents, who were doctors, moved to the United States. Joan joined them when she was 20 and went to college there.”

3. The interview with a director ____.

A. made her on the way to being famous in the world B. led to no immediate good result

C. made her play a leading part in Tai - pan D. gave her a chance to act in The Last Emperor

A school is showing badly-behaved pupils the error of their ways by sending them to an arts centre where actors mimic their behavior.

The Windsor boys’ secondary school used its school founding to save its local arts centre and establish a learning support unit there.

Now expelled(被开除的) pupils and students who are likely to be expelled are studying a course at the unit in Windsor arts centre while also working with artists. One pupil was asked to show Naomi Jackson, the drama teacher at the unit, how he had acted in a fierce argument with a teacher on the rugby filed, which led to his expulsion(开除). Then he showed her how to imitate(模仿) his attitude.

Ms. Jackson said, “He saw that the teacher had to get him out. Until then, he didn’t really understand because he didn’t have that self-awareness.”

“It gave him the chance to look at himself from the outside.”

Students also work in groups, acting as the aggressor, the victim and an observer to help them develop more awareness and understanding.

A professional theatre group, Everyday Theatre, which consists of former pupils, is at the school and works in the learning support unit.

An arts therapist(治疗专家) also helps students in the unit to express their problems and a street dancer builds up their discipline, concentration and capacity for hard work. Jane Turner is the teacher in charge of the Starts Project, which stands for Supportive Training and Arts. She said, “It’s about using the arts to develop social skills as well as anger management, rather than just trying to make them good at drama or arts.”

53. What is the passage mainly about?

A. How a school keeps students good at drama and arts. B. Why students are interested in learning drama and arts. C. A new attempt making students change their bad behavior.

D. An unusual idea to turn badly-behaved students into excellent ones.

本文第一段介绍了改变行为表现差的学生的方式,后文围绕此方式展开,最后一段 “It’s about using the arts to develop social skills as well as anger management, rather than just trying to make them good at drama or arts.”

54. The underlined word “mimic”(in Paragraph 1) probably means ____. A. correct

B. watch

C. improve

D. imitate

55. The artists at the Windsor boys’ secondary school are working towards their goal by ____. A. getting rid of students’ dissatisfaction B. developing students’ awareness of their error C. reducing the courses and making them easier

D. encouraging students’ imagination in subjects.

从第四、五段 “… he didn’t really understand because he didn’t have that self-awareness. It gave him the chance to look at himself from the outside.”

56. All of the following people work at the arts centre EXCEPT ____. A. an arts therapist C. former teachers

B. actors

D. a street dancer

第一段提到了actors;倒数第二段提到了an arts therapist 和a street dancer。
